The Short Sunderland was one of the finest flying boats ever built and served with the Royal Air Force Coastal Command for 21 years. Developed first as a patrol aircraft, the Sunderland came to be used more and more to take the war to the deadly German U-Boats.As the war continued, the Sunderland was used incresingly against U-Boats, earning the nickname the "Flying Porcupine" from the German crews. It was also very effective in air combat with its fearsome armourment, once fighting off a force of eight German JU88 bombers, shooting down three of them.Production ceased in 1945 and 739 aircraft were completed, but the Sunderland continued to serve after the war seeing use in the Korean Conflict
